The race finishes in Kibler Park, a long way from Soweto, so go back to a hotel, shower and rest before moving on in the afternoon. Orlando West is a different Johannesburg from the one around the start: streets of small houses, shebeens and a guided visit that explains the history of the place.
March in Johannesburg: late summer, with lows near 14°C and highs near 24°C. Rain is possible in the afternoon.
Night One: Orlando West
Lebo's Soweto Backpackers offers private rooms, a self-catering kitchen and local guided experiences. It is a guesthouse, not a hotel, so ask about noise, privacy and bathrooms before you book. If you want a conventional hotel, the Soweto Hotel and Conference Centre at Kliptown is another option; check current availability and what it can arrange for transfers.
Arrive in daylight with a driver you have booked in advance. Eat at the guesthouse or ask the hosts to recommend somewhere a short ride away, and avoid walking after dark.
Day Two Morning
Join a guided visit. Lebo's runs walking, bicycle and tuk-tuk formats, and the tuk-tuk is the sensible one after a marathon. Agree the finish time so you can make your flight with a margin.
Getting Home
Arrange a transfer to O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) through the guesthouse. FCDO warns about airport-related crime, so use a pre-booked, named driver and leave plenty of time.
