The Kieler Förde Marathon finishes at Kiel-Schilksee on a Sunday in September, and not every runner wants, or has time for, a longer excursion to Lübeck, Schleswig or further afield. Eckernförde is the shorter, gentler alternative: a harbour town on its own inlet of the Baltic, a short hop up the coast from Kiel, and a reasonable choice for a runner who wants sea air and a change of scene without committing a full day to travel. September here carries the same mild, settled character as the rest of this stretch of coast, cooler than the height of summer and with far fewer visitors than a July or August weekend would bring.
The train from Kiel Hauptbahnhof takes around 25 to 30 minutes, running at a regular interval through the day. This is genuinely the simplest of the excursions on offer from Kiel: no transfers, no need to plan around a specific departure time, and a short enough journey that it barely counts as travel at all.
The Harbour and the Coast
Eckernförde's identity is built around its harbour and the curve of its own Baltic inlet, the Eckernförder Bucht. The harbourfront itself is flat and walkable, a straightforward promenade lined with fishing boats and the smokehouses the town is known for regionally, worth a slow look rather than a purposeful march. Beyond the harbour, the town has a beach along the bay, popular with local visitors rather than international tourists, and a good option for sitting rather than walking if the legs have had enough for the day.
This is the point worth being honest about: two or three days after a marathon is not the moment for an ambitious coastal hike, however good the path looks on a map. Keep any beach walking here gentle, a stroll along the promenade or a short stretch of sand rather than an extended walk along the bay's full curve. For a runner staying on in the region longer, or returning another time, the longer coastal paths around the Eckernförder Bucht are a better fit for a day when the legs have properly recovered, not the day immediately after the race.
The old town itself, a short walk from the harbour, has a compact centre with a handful of cafes suited to sitting down with a coffee and watching the harbour traffic, which is arguably the most appropriate activity available on this particular day trip.
Getting Back
Return trains to Kiel run at broadly the same 25-to-30-minute frequency as the outbound journey, with no need to fix a specific time in advance. Head back to the station when the harbour, the beach, or simply the day itself feels sufficiently explored.
