After the Kielder Marathon: Hexham and Hadrian's Wall

The Route: Kielder → Hexham → Hadrian's Wall Logistics: By car; Hexham has rail access, but reaching Hadrian's Wall sites is more practical with a car. Marathon Month: October Duration: 2 nights

Kielder ──(by car)──> Hexham ──(by car)──> Hadrian's Wall

Hexham offers what Kielder itself lacks: a proper market town with a wider choice of restaurants, hotels and rail access, while still sitting within easy reach of Hadrian's Wall country. October along Hadrian's Wall: quieter than summer, with the exposed moorland sections best walked in daylight given shorter autumn hours.

Hexham and the Wall

Hexham's abbey and market square make a comfortable, low-effort base for the two nights after a demanding trail marathon, with considerably more restaurant choice than anywhere near Kielder itself. Hadrian's Wall, a short drive away, offers well-preserved forts and museum sites, from Housesteads to Chesters, with some stretches of the wall itself walkable on flat or gently rolling paths.

Where to stay: Hexham's town centre has a wider range of hotels than Kielder or Bellingham, a comfortable base for exploring the wall by car.

Where to eat: Hexham's market square and surrounding streets hold a genuine variety of restaurants and cafés, a welcome change after a weekend of race-village catering.

Getting Back

Hexham railway station offers onward rail connections toward Newcastle and beyond for anyone continuing their journey.
