A safari is done sitting down, so it suits legs that ran a hilly marathon. The drive there is long, though, so treat the day after the race as a rest day in Kigali and leave on the Monday.
June in Akagera: the drier season is starting, and the tourism authority describes the park as warmer than Kigali. Dawn drives can still be cool in an open vehicle, so bring a fleece, and pack sun protection for the afternoon.
Getting There
Ask the operator how long the transfer takes from your hotel and which park gate it uses. The roads include uneven stretches, so ask for breaks if your back is sore. Leave luggage space in the vehicle and agree where bags are stored.
The Park
Visit Rwanda confirms guided vehicle safaris, boat trips on Lake Ihema and overnight stays in and around the park. Book a guide for the main drive, because guides know where the animals are and set the pace. A boat trip on the lake is seated and gentle. No sighting is guaranteed, so treat any animal as a bonus.
The Lodge
Pick a lodge through your operator and ask whether the grounds are fenced, how far the room is from the dining area and whether it can serve an early breakfast before a dawn drive. Check what the quote includes. Park fees and drinks are often separate.
Getting Home
Return to Kigali on the third day and avoid a tight connection. Your hotel can arrange the transfer to Kigali International Airport (KGL). Allow for the road from the park running late.
