A Day on the Wörthersee: Boats, Tower and Miniatures

The autumn boat season began the day after the 2026 race, so the lake you ran round can be seen from the water, with a lift to a viewing tower and a flat miniature park for tired legs.

The marathon is a single lap of the Wörthersee, and for about four hours you saw it at eye level, at a pace that makes everything look the same. A boat is the antidote. It sits you down, it covers the same shore in the other direction and it asks nothing of your quadriceps. There is a timing catch worth knowing about. In 2026 the summer timetable ended on 27 September, the day of the race, and the autumn timetable began on 28 September. The race falls on the boundary, so confirm the current dates with Wörthersee Schifffahrt before you commit.

September in Klagenfurt: the airport weather station records a mean daily maximum of 20.8°C and a minimum of 10.0°C (1991 to 2020), with about 102 mm of rain across the month. Mornings can be misty, as they were on the 2026 race day. Bring a layer for the deck.

Getting there

Walk or take a bus from the old town to the boat landing in Klagenfurt. The autumn timetable in 2026 ran the Klagenfurt to Velden line daily from about 09:00 to 18:45, with stops at Krumpendorf, Reifnitz, Maria Wörth, Pörtschach and Velden, in both directions. The published timetable does not give crossing times, so ask at the landing how long each leg takes before you choose how far to ride. The boat is slow, which suits the occasion.

The day

Ride to Maria Wörth or Pörtschach, both on the autumn timetable. Get off for an hour, walk along the waterfront and eat lunch. Keep the walking short.

The Pyramidenkogel is a viewing tower on the hill south-west of the lake. Its September opening hours in 2026 were 09:00 to 19:00, with last admission at 18:30. It is a lift ride to the top, but reaching the tower from the shore needs a taxi or a bus. Check the operator's website for the autumn hours, and confirm the way there before you leave the boat.

Minimundus is a miniature-landmark park near the lake approach in Klagenfurt. In September 2026 it opened 09:00 to 19:00, with the ticket office closing an hour earlier. The paths are flat and wide, which suits a slow end to the day. Check the autumn hours at minimundus.at.

Where to eat

Villa Lido, at Friedelstrand 1, is a lakeside pizzeria and trattoria advertising hot food from 11:30 to 21:30. Confirm the hours before you book, since its homepage and imprint differ slightly.

Getting home

Return by boat if the last sailing suits you, or by regional train from Pörtschach or Velden. Check the last boat on your timetable before you board in the afternoon. If you fly out of Klagenfurt Airport, bus 4 runs between the airport and the centre and main station.
