The Košice Peace Marathon starts and finishes on Hlavná Street, which happens to be the same street most of the city's Old Town sights sit on or just off. That means the day after finishing 42.195 km has one built-in advantage: nothing worth seeing requires more walking than the finish line already demanded.
October in Košice: early autumn in eastern Slovakia is cool and often clear, with Old Town's chestnut trees turning colour by the middle of the month. Rain is a real possibility, so a waterproof layer is worth carrying even on a short walk.
Hlavná Street itself is pedestrianised for most of its length, running roughly 700 metres north to south through the historic core, flat and paved throughout. At its southern end stands St Elisabeth Cathedral, the largest church in Slovakia, its Gothic spires visible from most of the street. Entry to the main body of the cathedral is free; a climb up the tower is available for a small fee but is worth skipping the day after a marathon. A short walk further brings you to the East Slovak Museum, an indoor option with no stairs required to reach the ground-floor exhibits, useful if the legs need a seated break in air conditioning rather than more standing.
The rest of the day is best spent the way most runners actually want to spend it: sitting down. Old Town's café terraces along and just off Hlavná Street are numerous, and none require more than a few minutes' walk from the finish area. Sunday opening hours vary by venue, so it's worth checking ahead if a specific café matters to your plans, but there is enough choice along the street that this rarely becomes a problem in practice.
There is no return journey to plan. Everything on this route sits within Old Town, and the finish-area hotels most runners book are already at the centre of it.
