└──────────────────────────(night in Gdańsk, train back next day)───────────────────────┘
A night in Gdańsk turns the long train ride into something worth the effort. The journey takes about two and a half hours, which is a heavy day trip after a night marathon but a comfortable one-way leg when the return is the following morning. With the race finishing before dawn on Sunday, a Sunday-afternoon departure and a Monday return fits the shape of the weekend.
October in Gdańsk: the city sits on the Baltic coast, so pack a windproof layer. Museums and church towers often keep shorter hours or close on Mondays, so check before the return day.
Arriving
The historic centre is a few minutes' walk from Gdańsk Główny station, so a bag can go straight to the hotel without a taxi. Intercity and EIP fares from Koszalin start at about PLN 49 (about £10), with the price moving with demand and the date.
Długi Targ and the Basilica
Długi Targ, the Long Market, is the main street of the old town, and St Mary's Basilica stands close by. Together they fill most of an afternoon on foot. Opening hours and tower access are not given in the sources used, so confirm them locally.
The Motława embankment
The Motława embankment is the waterfront walk beside the old town and the natural place for the evening. It is flat and easy on tired legs.
The next morning
Leave time for the return. The journey home is about two and a half hours, and the last services are not covered here, so check the timetable before booking the hotel night.
