The marathon ends before dawn on Sunday, which makes Słupsk a sensible Sunday-afternoon or Monday trip: a short train ride to a town centre that can be walked in an afternoon. Museums often close on Mondays in Poland, so check which day each one opens before choosing.
October in Słupsk: the day is mostly indoors and along the river, so a coat and comfortable shoes are enough.
The castle and the museum
The Pomeranian dukes' castle stands in the town centre and has housed the Museum of Middle Pomerania since 1965. The museum's collections cover contemporary art, ethnography and history, and it holds a large collection of objects related to the artist Witkacy. The museum lost an estimated 90% of its pre-war collection and reopened on 1 May 1948. Opening hours and ticket prices are not given in the sources used, so confirm them before travelling.
The medieval walls
Fragments of the medieval defensive walls survive in the centre and can be found on foot between the castle and the old town streets.
The Słupia boulevards
The river Słupia runs through the town, and the boulevards along it give a flat, easy walk that suits legs after 42 kilometres. It is the natural last stretch before returning to the station.
Getting back
Trains run in both directions, with both Intercity and regional services on the route. Check the last departure to Koszalin on the day, because this guide does not carry a timetable.
