Osaka is the easiest big-city day from Kyoto, and the rapid train does most of the work. It suits runners who want food and lights after a week of temples.
Getting there
The JR special rapid (shinkaisoku) from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station takes about 28 to 30 minutes for 580 yen. From Osaka Station, the subway reaches Namba and the Dotonbori canal in a few stops.
Dotonbori
Ichiran Ramen has a Dotonbori branch, where each diner sits in a booth. Queues build in the evening, so go early if your legs will not stand a long wait. The canal walk is flat, and benches are easy to find.
Where to stay
Around Namba, the Holiday Inn Osaka Namba and the Swissotel Nankai Osaka are options. The Swissotel is connected to Nankai Namba Station, which saves a walk. Neither was priced for race week.
Getting back
The same JR service runs back to Kyoto. If you stay in Osaka overnight, check the last rapid from Osaka Station before you book dinner.
