Uji is the lightest recovery trip from Kyoto. It sits 21 to 22 minutes south by train, and the main sight is a single temple with a garden.

Getting there

The JR Nara Line runs from Kyoto Station to Uji in about 21 to 22 minutes for 240 yen. Keihan trains also reach Keihan-Uji with a transfer, in about 29 to 36 minutes for 440 yen. The JR station is the simpler of the two.

Byodo-in

The Phoenix Hall is the building on the 10-yen coin. The garden is open 8:45 to 17:30 with last entry at 17:15, and adult admission is 700 yen. The interior of the Phoenix Hall costs 300 yen more. Visits start every 20 minutes for up to 35 people, and tickets are issued at the garden reception. No advance booking is stated, and the interior can close without notice for ceremonies, so treat it as a bonus.

Tea

Nakamura Tokichi main store serves matcha and sweets with a garden. Itohkyuemon has a main store and a branch at the JR station, which is the better choice if you want to sit down near the platform before the train back.

Where to stay

Few runners stay overnight, but Hotel Trend JR Uji-Ekimae is about 8 minutes' walk from Byodo-in, and Uji Daiichi Hotel is another option. February evenings are cold, so keep a layer in the bag.

Getting back

Trains to Kyoto run on the JR Nara Line from the same station. The ride is short enough to leave at the last light and still be back for dinner.
