After the Maratona di Latina: Naples
The Route: Latina → Naples → Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP) Logistics: A regional train via Latina Scalo, or a hire car. Check the Monday timetable and allow for a change. Marathon Month: December Duration: 2 nights
Latina ──(transfer to Latina Scalo)──> Naples ──(bus or taxi)──> Naples Capodichino (NAP)
The Maratona di Latina finishes on a Sunday, and Naples lies further south along the coast. The organiser does not list it as an excursion, so this is a longer extension for runners with time. Check the rail timetable, including the link from Latina to the Latina Scalo station, and book a seat if the train is busy.
December in Naples is cool and wet at times. The city is busy, traffic is heavy, and crossing the road takes attention. Keep to a short, slow first evening.
Nights one and two: Naples
The seafront walk along the bay is level and gives a pleasant hour. The historic centre is a grid of narrow streets, and the big museums are a short taxi ride from each other. Check opening days, since some close on Mondays or Tuesdays, and book timed tickets.
Pompeii is a day trip by train from Naples. The site is large, flat in places and uneven in others, with a lot of standing and walking on old paving. It is a poor idea for the day after a marathon, so save it for the second day, and check the winter opening hours and last entry time.
Where to stay
Choose a hotel near Piazza Garibaldi for the station, or near the waterfront for a flat evening walk. Confirm lift access and book a refundable room.
Food
Naples is known for pizza and seafood, and there are many places to choose from. Ask the hotel for current recommendations and check opening days.
Getting Home
Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP) is connected to the city centre by bus and taxi. Check the airport bus timetable and allow extra time for traffic.
