After the Maratona di Latina: Sermoneta
The Route: Latina → Sermoneta → Latina Logistics: A hire car is simplest. Local buses may run, but check the Monday timetable. Marathon Month: December Duration: Day trip
Latina ──(car or bus, check timetable)──> Sermoneta ──(same route back)──> Latina
The Maratona di Latina is flat, and Sermoneta is the opposite. The town sits in the hills inland from Latina, and the organiser's territory guide lists it as an excursion, together with the Caetani castle. After a marathon on a flat course the legs may be stiff rather than broken, but the streets here are steep, and a short visit is wiser than a long one.
December in Sermoneta is cool and can be wet. Cobbles turn slippery, so wear shoes with grip. Some sites keep winter hours and some close on Mondays, so check before leaving.
The town and the castle
The old town is a network of narrow lanes on a hillside, with steps between levels. The castle is the main visit, and its opening times and ticket prices need checking. Park near the lower entrance if possible and take the stairs at your own pace. There are cafes in the centre, though several close on some weekdays.
Keep the plan small: a slow walk, one sight and a long lunch is better than a full tour.
Food
Ask at the hotel for a recommendation for lunch in the hills. Expect regional dishes with pasta, but confirm menus and opening days.
Getting back
Return to Latina the way you came. If taking a bus, check the last departure before settling into lunch.
