After the Leeds Marathon: Harrogate and Knaresborough

After a hilly 26.2-mile loop out to Otley and back, a spa town's unhurried pace suits recovering legs better than another city's worth of walking. May in Harrogate: the Valley Gardens and RHS Garden Harlow Carr are in full late-spring bloom, and Bettys Tea Room, the town's best-known institution, runs its normal seasonal hours without the peak-summer queue. Direct Northern trains from Leeds take around 35 minutes.

Harrogate

The Royal Pump Room Museum, in the town centre, covers Harrogate's history as a Victorian and Edwardian spa resort built around its sulphur springs, and is flat throughout; entry is approximately £5.50. The Valley Gardens, a short, level walk from the centre, offer wide, well-maintained paths through 17 acres of formal and informal planting, an easy option on tired legs.

Bettys Tea Room, on Parliament Street, has operated since 1919 and remains the definitive Harrogate institution: a full afternoon tea, or simply a pot of tea and a Fat Rascal (a large fruited scone-like cake unique to the chain), is the specific reason most visitors come. Expect a queue at peak times; the wait is part of the experience rather than a sign to go elsewhere.

Knaresborough

A five-minute onward train hop brings the same line to Knaresborough, a market town built into a dramatic sandstone gorge above the River Nidd. The riverside path below the town, along the Nidd Gorge, is flat and well-used, with rowing boats for hire on the river itself if walking further is unwelcome. Knaresborough Castle, ruined but substantially standing, sits directly above the gorge with wide views over the viaduct and river; the grounds around it are level, though the castle's own internal stairs are not.

Getting Back

Direct Northern trains run from Knaresborough back to Leeds throughout the afternoon, taking around 40 minutes, or from Harrogate directly in around 35 minutes if skipping the return leg through Knaresborough. Check current times at thetrainline.com or northernrailway.co.uk.
