After the Leeds Marathon: Day Trip to York

The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon finishes back at AMT Headingley Stadium after a hilly 26.2-mile loop out to Otley and back. May in York: the city's gardens and the Museum Gardens are in full late-spring growth, and York sits comfortably below the peak summer crowding of July and August while still running full visitor hours. Direct trains from Leeds station take 25 minutes and run several times an hour throughout the day, making this the simplest possible day trip on tired legs.

York Minster and the Old Town

York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, dominates the old town's skyline and is flat throughout its main nave, though the central tower involves a significant climb best skipped on post-marathon legs. Entry is approximately £18. The surrounding old town is largely pedestrianised and flat, cobbled in places rather than smoothly paved, so footwear matters more here than on a typical city pavement.

The Shambles, a narrow medieval street of overhanging timber-framed shops a short walk from the Minster, is York's best-known street and busy through the day; it is short enough, at under 200 metres, to see without significant walking. The York City Walls, largely intact and walkable in sections, offer a flat vantage point over the old town for anyone not wanting to climb the wall steps themselves, viewable from street level at multiple points.

The National Railway Museum, a 10-minute walk from the station, is free to enter and almost entirely level, housing full-size steam locomotives including a Mallard and a Japanese bullet train, a genuinely low-effort indoor option for the day after a marathon.

Getting Back

Direct LNER and Northern services run from York back to Leeds throughout the afternoon and evening, taking 25 minutes; there is no need to book ahead for same-day off-peak travel on this short a route, though booking in advance can still secure a lower Advance fare if travelling at a fixed time.
