After the Liberia Marathon: Robertsport and Libassa

The Route: Monrovia → Robertsport → Monrovia → Libassa Ecolodge → Roberts International Airport (ROB) Logistics: Two long drives on the Robertsport road, one short one to Libassa. Keep one private car and driver for the whole trip. Marathon Month: November Duration: 4 nights

Monrovia ──(3 to 5 hours)──> Robertsport (2 nights) ──(3 to 5 hours)──> Monrovia (1 night) ──(about 30 min)──> Libassa (1 night) ──> Roberts International Airport (ROB)

The sequence follows the legs. Rest first, then a long drive and a beach, then a long drive back, then a short one to a lodge near the airport. Nothing in it needs a climb.

November on the Liberian coast. The dry season starts in November, so the Robertsport road is generally firmer than in the rainy months, and the sea is still warm. Surf swell is more frequent between April and October, so expect modest waves.

Nights one and two: Robertsport

Leave Monrovia the morning after the race, or a day later if your legs say so. The drive takes three to five hours on a dirt road after the paved section, with Lake Piso visible on your right for nearly 30 miles. A private taxi cost about USD 150 one way in 2024, and a shared taxi from Duala Market is about USD 15 a seat but waits until it fills.

On the first day walk the beach southwest of town, flat sand with no gradient, and rest. On the second take the Lake Piso boat tour that your guesthouse can arrange, in a hand-carved motor canoe. Philip's Guest House and Vartilda Beach Guest House are both on the beach, and Nana's Lodge runs beach activities. The Robertsport Surf Club rents boards for USD 10 and offers a board and lesson for USD 20. Fisherman's is the learner break, two to four feet over sand. Save any surf for the second day.

Night three: Monrovia

Drive back on the third morning and sleep in Monrovia. This is a rest night. Royal Grand Hotel in Sinkor has Café Royale, which serves buffets and an all-day breakfast, and the Boulevard Palace Hotel is the alternative. If you have the energy, the National Museum, Providence Baptist Church and Centennial Pavilion make a short outing by car.

Night four: Libassa Ecolodge

On the fourth day drive to Libassa Ecolodge at Kpan's Town on the Marshall Highway. The operator quotes about 30 minutes from Monrovia and the airport. The lodge sits in forest where a lagoon meets the Atlantic, with pools and botanical gardens. Take a slow turn through the gardens and keep the rest of the afternoon free. Ask about meals and a late checkout when you book.

Getting to Roberts International Airport (ROB)

Roberts International Airport at Robertsfield is the main international gateway. The Farmington Hotel stands opposite it and is the fallback if the lodge is full. Arrange the transfer with the lodge the day before. The Foreign Office advises booking airport transport in advance and not travelling after dark.
