After the Limassol Marathon: Kourion and Amathous

The Route: Limassol hotel → Kourion → Limassol → Amathous → Limassol → Limassol Airport Express Logistics: No luggage moves. Kourion is about 19 km west of Limassol and Amathous about 11 km east of the city centre. Those are geography, not journey times, so ask a taxi firm or your hotel for a quote and duration. This plan keeps a single room for the Monday to Thursday after the race and visits two ancient sites on separate mornings. It suits a runner who wants to unpack once, rest, and do one modest thing a day.

April in Limassol: the archaeological sites keep shorter early-April hours, closing at 17:00, and the days are warm in the sun and cool in the shade. In most years it is pleasant for walking, though conditions vary. A hat and water help at both sites, which have little shelter.

Monday: the Molos and the castle

Start with a short day near the hotel. The Molos promenade is flat and open, and the Prokymea sculpture park runs along it. The Limassol Medieval Castle, near the Old Port on Richardou and Berengarias, opens Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00, with entry about €4.50. The interior has steps, which is a reason to go on Monday and not on the Sunday of the race.

Tuesday: Kourion

Kourion stands on a cliff about 19 km west of Limassol. It opens daily from 08:30 to 17:00 through 15 April, with entry about €4.50, and the theatre and mosaics are the draw. Access is partly step-free, and the baths include steps. The local bus goes to Kourion Beach, which is not the same as the ruin gate, so book a taxi or transfer to the actual archaeological entrance and agree the return time before you go. Plan to be back before the site closes at 17:00.

Wednesday: Amathous

Amathous, the ancient royal city, lies about 11 km east of the city centre, past the hotel strip where the marathon turns. It opens daily from 08:30 to 17:00 through 15 April, with entry about €2.50. The lower site is partly accessible. The climb to the acropolis is optional, and legs that ran 42 km three days earlier may well say no. Normal bus route 30 serves the Ancient Amathounta stop, but check that race-weekend restrictions have ended and the service is running before you rely on it, or book a transfer.

Thursday: the way home

Use Thursday as a rest day or for the journey home. The Limassol Airport Express runs from Agios Georgios Havouzas to both Larnaca and Paphos airports, with an adult fare of €10 at the time of writing, so you need a separate taxi or bus to the station. For a hotel, Old Port Hotel at 7–9 Dimitri Mitropoulou and NYX Hotel Limassol at the corner of Anexartisias and Christodoulou Hadjipavlou are both central. Ask about a late checkout and luggage storage for the last day.
