The marathon finishes beside the cathedral on a Sunday, so Monday is the day after you ran past the buildings. The Congress guided programme usually runs from 09:00 to 17:00 in half-hour groups of up to 50, so a morning slot gives you the rest of the day to recover.

August in Brasília is the dry season. Rain is unlikely, mornings are cool and afternoons warm up, and the main discomfort is dry air. Carry a bottle of water and a hat. The sun is strong on the open Esplanada, which has little shade.

The visit

Booking is required, and you need an accepted identity document. Foreign visitors normally carry a passport. Dress rules differ between weekdays and weekends, so read them when you book. The programme is closed to ordinary visitors on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Thursdays are reserved for schools, so Monday is a convenient day. The visit means standing in queues and at security, and some of it is on foot, so take it slowly with tired legs. The Congress site has carried a temporary closure notice at times, so confirm your slot before you leave the hotel.

The Esplanada

Afterwards, walk a short way along the Esplanada dos Ministérios, the wide central axis you ran along. Keep it to a short stroll. The cathedral at its western end is shut on Mondays on its main published schedule, so you can see the outside and come back on a Tuesday if you are staying on. The cathedral's visitor page lists Tuesday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:45, Saturday from 08:00 to 16:30 and Sunday from 09:00 to 17:30.

Where to eat

The Brasília Shopping in the northern hotel sector lists Sunday and weekday food-court and restaurant hours from noon to 22:00, so ring ahead for Monday. The Mané Mercado at the Arena BRB Mané Garrincha in Asa Norte is a food hall with several kitchens, including sushi and grilled dishes, with table ordering and reservations. Its hours differ between listings, so check them first.

Getting back

Take a taxi back to your hotel. Brasília International Airport (BSB) has a regular bus 102 to the Rodoviária, official taxis at domestic arrivals and a pickup point for app cars. Do not book a flight for the same evening.
