The Ljubljana Marathon finishes on Kongresni trg on the third Sunday of October, and Lake Bled makes the case for itself as the easiest possible next-day outing: close enough for a single day, and flat enough around the lake's edge that post-marathon legs are unlikely to object.

October at Lake Bled: early autumn brings cooler air and thinner crowds than the summer season, with the surrounding hills beginning to turn colour. Boat services to the island continue to run, though it's worth checking the exact departure schedule, which shortens slightly outside peak summer months.

Direct buses run from Ljubljana Bus Station to Bled several times a day, taking around an hour and fifteen minutes with no change required. The alternative is a train to Lesce-Bled station followed by a short local bus into the town centre, marginally slower but a reasonable option if train travel is preferred.

Bled

The lake's perimeter path is the main event here: a flat, paved and packed-earth walking route running the full circumference, roughly 6 kilometres, with benches positioned at regular intervals for anyone who wants to take it slowly. It rarely feels like a chore even on tired legs, given the pace can be dictated entirely by how the day is going.

The traditional pletna boats cross to Bled Island from several points along the shore, a short paddled crossing to the Church of the Assumption, with entry to the church and its bell tower priced at approximately €12 (£10). Above the lake, Bled Castle offers views back down over the water, though reaching it involves a steady uphill walk or a short taxi ride, worth weighing against how the legs are actually holding up that day.

For lunch, the lakeside cafés facing the water are the simplest option, most offering a slice of kremna rezina, the custard cream cake that has become closely associated with Bled specifically rather than Slovenia generally.

Return buses to Ljubljana run at regular intervals through the afternoon and early evening; check the current timetable before setting out; there's no need to plan the return trip precisely in advance given the frequency of services.
