The DOZ Maraton Łódź finishes on a Sunday in April, and by Monday the stairs at the hotel are the hardest part of the day. Tomaszów Mazowiecki, about an hour by train from Łódź, answers with a short list of attractions, none of them far apart.

April in Tomaszów Mazowiecki: the cave route is underground and the river museum is an open-air site, so the weather decides the order of the day. Check the forecast before leaving Łódź.

The train from Łódź takes around an hour. The regional operator ŁKA runs services to the town, and a valid ŁKA ticket for the day gives reduced entry at several local sites and free city transport. Keep the ticket until the last stop. Check the current timetable at lka.lodzkie.pl before leaving.

Groty Nagórzyckie

The Nagórzyce Caves are an underground route of about 160 m, taken in groups of up to 30 people. A standard ticket costs PLN 25, or PLN 18 with a valid ŁKA ticket, at published prices. Confirm the current rules and opening hours before travelling, because group sizes and tour times control entry.

Skansen Rzeki Pilicy and Niebieskie Źródła

The Pilica River Museum, at ul. Modrzewskiego 9/11, is an open-air museum of buildings, vehicles, milling equipment and objects from local battles and from nearby Spała. It sits a short bus ride from the railway station and opposite the entrance to the Niebieskie Źródła nature reserve, whose spring pools lie a few kilometres from the centre. The museum costs PLN 15 at the standard rate. Check the museum's site for hours at skansenpilicy.pl.

The town also has a 17th-century wooden church, St Martin's, if there is time and energy left.

Getting back

Trains run back to Łódź through the day. Look up the last departure, and reach the station with a margin of at least half an hour.
