Barentsburg is an active Russian mining community about 60 km from Longyearbyen on the shores of Grønfjorden. Visit Svalbard mentions it among the polar summer destinations, but the page does not give the travel details. Milehacker lists a Pomor museum, a Russian Orthodox chapel, a local brewery for sampling and Soviet-era monuments, and says the town has a functioning consulate and a hotel. Boat, duration and season were not given. Treat any claim about them with care until the operator confirms.

June at 78° north: polar summer runs from 17 May to 30 September. The sun does not set, but wind and cold remain. Take a windproof shell and gloves.

Night One: Barentsburg

A night in the hotel gives time for the museum and the chapel without a rush for the return boat. The community is not part of the Longyearbyen settlement, so the usual rule applies: stay with your guide or the operator's arrangements and do not walk out of town alone. Polar bears are why the race posts armed guards.

The brewery is the obvious evening stop. Ask the operator about its opening hours and what it sells, and about anything else you need for the visit.

Getting back

The return follows the operator's arrangements. Allow a margin before any flight from Svalbard Airport (LYR), and confirm the shuttle timetable at your Longyearbyen hotel.
