Copenhagen is the easiest international extension from Malmö, and the only one that crosses a border. The Öresundståg from Malmö Central takes about 35 minutes and runs roughly every 20 minutes. A one-way fare is approximately SEK 120 (£9). Bring a passport, because identity checks can take place on the crossing, and check the current rules at skanetrafiken.se and dsb.dk before you travel.
October in Copenhagen: daytime highs run 11 to 13°C in the first half of the month and fall to 8 to 10°C by the end, with lows of 6 to 8°C. Roughly 10 to 13 days of rain are normal. Daylight lasts about 11.5 hours at the start of October and 9.5 hours by the end, and the clocks go back on the last Sunday of the month.
Nights One and Two: Copenhagen
Tivoli Gardens turns to Halloween in October. The season usually opens in the first days of the month and runs to the start of November, with illuminations on Tivoli Lake, shadow projections after sunset and a children's ghost train by day. Most shows come with standard park entry. Check the opening dates and prices at tivoli.dk, since they change from year to year.
Museums are the better choice for tired legs, because they offer seating. The National Museum of Denmark and Rosenborg Castle are both named in the city's October listings. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek offers free entry on the last Wednesday of each month; confirm that day before relying on it. Opening days vary in autumn, so check each museum before building a day around it.
The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art lies north of the city and works as a half-day outing, but it needs a train journey and a longer walk, which is a lot for the second morning after a marathon.
Choose a base near Copenhagen Central Station, so that one train goes back to Malmö and the airport links start from the same concourse.
Getting to Copenhagen Airport
Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is about 8 km from the city centre. The Metro, S-train and bus network all run there, and the cost is around DKK 36 (£4) one way. Check current fares before travelling. The airport also sits only about 30 minutes from Malmö over the bridge, so a final night in Malmö remains an option if your flight is early.
