After the Malmö Marathon: Lund
The Route: Malmö Central → Lund → Malmö Central Logistics: Regional train in both directions, about 12 minutes each way. A single destination within walking distance of the station. Marathon Month: October Duration: Day trip
Malmö Central ──(about 12 mins regional train)──> Lund ──(about 12 mins)──> Malmö Central
Lund is the shortest trip on offer after the Malmö Marathon, and the one with the fewest decisions. The regional train from Malmö Central covers the 13 km in about 12 minutes, and a single fare costs approximately SEK 46 (£3.50). Check the timetable and ticket options at skanetrafiken.se on the day, because services change in autumn.
October in Lund: daytime highs sit around 12°C, with cool mornings and about eleven hours of daylight at the start of the month, shrinking quickly towards the end. Nothing here depends on the season. The cathedral and the old town are indoor and outdoor in equal measure, which makes the day easy to adjust if the weather turns.
The cathedral
Lund Cathedral has stood at the centre of the city for more than 900 years and is described as the best example of Romanesque architecture in Scandinavia. Two towers rise to about 55 metres. Entry is free.
The astronomical clock stands just left of the main entrance, with parts dating back to the 1420s. It plays at noon and 3 pm from Monday to Saturday, and at 1 pm and 3 pm on Sunday. Those times come from a visitor guide that is several years old, so confirm them on the cathedral's own website before building the day around them.
Stairs beside the altar lead down to the crypt, a low space of stone columns where figures from Lund's history are buried. Going down steps is the movement tired quads dislike most in the days after a marathon. Take the stairs slowly, hold the rail, or skip the crypt and spend the time on the nave, where there is seating.
The old town on foot
Lund University gives the centre its character, and the compact streets around the cathedral can be covered in a gentle loop at post-marathon pace. Older streets may be cobbled, so shoes with some cushioning are kinder than flat-soled trainers.
Stay for a late lunch in the centre and leave after the 3 pm clock. Check the return times at skanetrafiken.se before settling in for lunch. The journey ends where it began, at Malmö Central, with the evening free.
