Malmö Central ──(about 55 mins regional train)──> Ystad ──(about 55 mins)──> Malmö Central ──(about 30 mins)──> Copenhagen Airport (CPH)

Ystad sits 55 km east of Malmö on the south coast of Skåne. The regional train runs about once an hour, takes around 55 minutes and costs approximately SEK 120 (£9) one way. Confirm the timetable at skanetrafiken.se, because an hourly service leaves a long wait if a connection slips.

October in Ystad: daytime highs in southern Skåne are around 12°C. Guided tours and boat trips keep seasonal schedules, so check what operates in October before promising anyone a particular outing.

Night One: Ystad

Ystad is known for its half-timbered houses and as the setting for the Wallander novels by Henning Mankell. Kurt Wallander, Mankell's fictional detective, is a police inspector based in the town, and a "Wallander's Ystad" walking tour follows the places that appear in the books. Confirm dates and meeting points with the local tourist office, since tour schedules shift between seasons.

The town centre is the main recovery asset. Its old streets are compact and best covered slowly. Older sections may be cobbled, which is rough underfoot after a marathon, so choose the smoother pavements when the legs start to complain. Sankta Maria Church is free to enter and offers somewhere to sit out of the wind.

Ales Stenar, a stone monument east of the town, appears on most lists of things to see here. It needs separate transport and some walking at the site. Check current bus times and the ground conditions before committing, and leave it out if the legs are still heavy.

For a bed, Ystad Saltsjöbad is a seaside hotel with a spa, which suits a night when the main aim is to lie down. Eating is easy to arrange in the centre; a restaurant near the harbour or main square keeps the walk short.

A Wallander novel suits the train ride. Faceless Killers is the first in the series, published in Swedish in 1991 and in English translation in 1997, with Wallander working from Ystad.

Getting to Copenhagen Airport

Take the hourly regional train back to Malmö Central, then change for Copenhagen Airport (CPH). Visit Sweden gives the airport as about 30 minutes from Malmö over the Öresund Bridge. Allow time for the connection at Malmö Central. Malmö Airport (MMX) is a separate airport with its own limited services, so check which airport your flight uses.
