Balcarce is a small town inland from the coast, and it is where Juan Manuel Fangio was born. The museum dedicated to him is the reason to go. The town itself is flat and quiet, which suits a night of recovery after the marathon.
April in Balcarce: Autumn mornings can be cool, and the inland air is often cooler and more still than on the seafront. Expect daytime temperatures close to those of Mar del Plata, with rain possible. Bring a light jacket for the evening.
Travel in the morning and aim to reach the town by lunchtime, so the museum visit fits the afternoon. Hire cars are easier for the return, though buses are the usual choice. Confirm timetables before booking, as services change by season.
The Museo Fangio
The museum stands at Dardo Rocha and Mitre, near the centre of the town. It holds trophies, cars and gifts from the driver's racing career, and the museum's own site calls it the most important motorsport museum in South America. The halls are indoors on a level floor, and the visit takes an hour or two at an easy pace.
Opening hours listed by the museum are 10:00 to 17:00 on business days and 10:00 to 18:00 at weekends and on holidays. Entry prices are listed on the museum site, and they change, so check the current figure before going. An audio guide is available.
The town
The centre is compact and flat, and a loop of the main square and the nearest streets takes less than an hour. Cafés around the square suit a late afternoon. Opening hours are shorter than in the city, so check before planning a particular stop.
Where to sleep
A small hotel near the centre keeps the museum and dinner within a short walk. Ask about ground-floor rooms and breakfast times when booking, and whether a lift is available.
Getting back
Return to Mar del Plata the next morning. Allow a margin before any onward flight, and book the coach or transfer the day before.
