Tandil sits in the Tandilia hills, among rounded rock outcrops that give the town its character. It is a larger place than Balcarce, with a population of roughly 145,000, and has enough to fill two quiet days without hard walking.

April in Tandil: The climate is mild and humid. Autumn mornings are often cold, and fog is common, so expect a cooler start than on the coast. Rain falls through the year. Bring layers and a waterproof.

Travel on a weekday if the schedule allows. Coaches run through the day, and a hire car makes the viewpoints easier to reach. Confirm timetables before booking.

Day one: the town centre

Arrive, check in and walk the central streets. The main square and the streets around it are level, with cafés and shops that suit a slow afternoon. Ask the hotel for a dinner recommendation that sells local produce, and eat early.

Day two: rocks and viewpoints

The Piedra Movediza, a famous balancing boulder, fell long ago, and a replica now stands in its place on the hill. A taxi can take you close, and the walk to the viewpoint should be checked at the base before starting. Hills around the town offer further outlooks, and a taxi driver can set out a short route with stops. Ask about steps and slopes at each stop.

The Cerro Centinela rock formation lies outside the centre and is also reached by road. Check opening arrangements and any entry charge before going.

Where to sleep

A hotel near the central square keeps restaurants and cafés within a few minutes' walk. Ask about lifts and breakfast times when booking, and whether late checkout is available for the departure day.

Getting back

Return to Mar del Plata by coach or car on the third morning. The road is long enough to plan a margin before any onward flight. Book the coach or a transfer the day before.
