MK Marathon finishes with a lap of the Stadium MK pitch after a flat course through Milton Keynes' modern, planned Redway network; Oxford, less than an hour away, offers about as complete a contrast as English geography allows. May in Oxford: the colleges' quads and gardens are in full late-spring bloom, and the city runs at a steady pace between the winter term and the peak summer tourist season. The Colleges and the Bodleian

Christ Church, Oxford's grandest and most visited college, includes the dining hall that inspired the Harry Potter films' Great Hall and a cathedral that doubles as the college chapel; entry is approximately £18 and the grounds are largely flat with some worn stone steps in older sections. The Bodleian Library, one of Europe's oldest libraries, offers guided tours of its historic reading rooms, including the Radcliffe Camera visible from outside on Radcliffe Square without a ticket.

The Ashmolean Museum, Britain's oldest public museum, is free to enter and spans ancient Egypt to modern art across several level floors, a genuinely low-effort option for legs still recovering from a marathon the day before.
