After the Nairobi Marathon: Elephants and Giraffes

The Route: Hotel → Sheldrick nursery → Giraffe Centre → Lunch → Hotel Logistics: One driver for the whole day. Book the nursery in advance. Marathon Month: October Duration: Day trip

Hotel ──(driver)──> Sheldrick nursery (11:00) ──(driver)──> Giraffe Centre ──> Lunch ──(driver)──> Hotel

The marathon is run on a Sunday, which leaves Monday for something gentle. The Sheldrick nursery admits visitors only for an hour, from 11:00 to 12:00, and you must book in advance within three months of the visit. There is no same-day admission.

October in Nairobi: the short rains begin in the second half of the year, so rain and mud are possible. Wear shoes that can get wet.

The Nursery

Standing outdoors for the hour is the main effort, so wear comfortable shoes and take a folding stool if you use one. There is a separate park fee and a cash donation, so bring both. Allow time for the approach to the Mbagathi gate, since traffic and checks can add delay. Confirm the entrance on your booking.

The Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Centre is on Nyumbi Road off Duma Road, open daily from 09:00 to 17:00, and takes card and M-Pesa. The operator suggests 1.5 to 2 hours. After a marathon, stay on the raised feeding platform and skip the nature walk.

Lunch

Eat in Karen or back at your hotel, and book ahead for a group.

Getting Back

Keep the same driver. Agree the price and the return time in advance, and be back at the hotel before dark.
