Capri is the most expensive stay in the Bay of Naples, and mid-October is the best time to afford it. The race is on a Sunday, and the following Monday and Tuesday on the island are quiet. Ferries from Naples take about 50 minutes on a high-speed boat and up to about 85 minutes on a standard ferry, and fares were about €14 to €31 depending on the type. The main operators are Caremar from Calata Porta di Massa and SNAV and others from Molo Beverello. Check the schedule and book in advance, because some services end at the start of the autumn season.

October on Capri: the weather is mild but changeable, and rough seas can cancel boats. Some shops, restaurants and beach clubs close for the season. Hotels are cheaper than in summer, although Capri is never cheap. Leave a margin on the day you travel home, and check the forecast.

Nights One and Two: Capri

From Marina Grande a funicular climbs to Capri town in a few minutes. Check the price and the hours. The town centre, the Piazzetta, is flat and paved, and the walk from the funicular station is short. The Gardens of Augustus are a short walk from the Piazzetta; the paths are paved with some slopes and steps, and the view is across to the Faraglioni rocks. Via Krupp, the zigzag path below the gardens, is a staircase and best avoided on tired legs.

Anacapri, the higher town, is reached by bus. A chairlift runs from Anacapri to Monte Solaro, the island's highest point, but it depends on the wind, so check that it is running. Check opening times for villas and gardens, because some close for the season.

Where to stay. Hotel Syrene is in Capri town. Hotel La Scalinatella is a luxury hotel. Check the prices and the walk from the funicular on the booking page, and book a cancellable room.

Where to eat. Local dishes include ravioli caprese, filled with cheese and herbs, and caprese salad with fresh mozzarella and tomato. Book a table in the evening, and check which restaurants are open.

Getting home

Take a morning boat back to Naples if you have a flight the same day, and check the time of the last boat the day before. For Naples Capodichino airport (NAP), take a taxi or the Alibus from the port, and check the route on the day. Leave a margin in case a boat is cancelled by weather.
