After the New Forest Marathon: Lymington and the Isle of Wight

Lymington sits just south of the New Forest, a genuine working harbour town rather than a manufactured tourist stop, and makes an easy day out for legs recovering from a multi-terrain marathon. September in Lymington: the harbour is past peak sailing season but still busy, with the town's cobbled high street and Saturday market running as normal.

Lymington

Lymington's High Street, a gently sloping run of Georgian shopfronts and independent traders, is flat enough for an easy post-race walk, ending at the quay where the town's sailing and ferry traffic converges. The Lymington and Pennington Nature Reserve, just outside the town centre along the coast path, offers a level, mostly flat walk along old salt-working land, now a wetland reserve with a genuine range of coastal bird life.

The Isle of Wight (optional extension)

For a fuller day, the Wightlink passenger ferry runs from Lymington to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, a crossing of roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Yarmouth itself is a small, walkable harbour town, manageable as a half-day extension without needing a car on the island, though those wanting to see more of the island should allow the whole day and expect a longer return.

Where to eat: The Haven, in Lymington's Yacht Haven marina, serves food with harbour views, a straightforward lunch stop before or after a ferry crossing. Monkey Brewhouse, on Southampton Road, runs its own on-site microbrewery alongside a full menu.

Getting Back

The return drive or train from Lymington to Brockenhurst takes 15 to 20 minutes; ferry passengers should build in extra time for the Yarmouth-to-Lymington return crossing before making their way back.
