The Novi Sad Marathon finishes on Trg slobode on a Sunday afternoon, and the day after is a day for a short ride and a short walk. Sremski Karlovci is the nearest town that rewards both. Its sights sit close together in a small centre.

October in Sremski Karlovci: the town is known for its vines and wine, but harvest timing varies from year to year, and some cellars take visitors only by appointment. Ask the tourist office before planning a tasting.

Getting there

Local bus lines 61 and 62 run to Sremski Karlovci. Line 61 leaves from the Futoška stop by the petrol station, takes about 24 minutes and is listed as running every 20 minutes. Fares are small. Check the timetable on the city transport operator's site (gspns.co.rs), because suburban frequencies change at weekends. A taxi takes about 13 minutes.

The town

The tourist office lists the Patriarch's Residence, the Grammar School, the Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicholas, the Chapel of Peace, the Karlovci Theological School and the Four Lions fountain. They are close together, and the streets are level. The Chapel of Peace marks the site of the 1699 peace treaty.

Stražilovo, a recreation area where the poet Branko Radičević is buried, lies further out. It means a climb, which is a poor idea on tired legs.

Opening hours for churches and museums are not published in the sources, so check with the Tourism Organisation of Sremski Karlovci (karlovci.org.rs) before going. Allow three to four hours.

Eating

Restaurant names for the town were not verified. Ask the tourist office or your hotel for a table, and ask what is open on a Monday.

Getting back

Take the same bus back to Novi Sad. Check the last departure when you arrive.
