After the HCA Marathon: Copenhagen

The Route: Odense → Copenhagen → Copenhagen Airport Logistics: One train from Odense central station. Copenhagen Airport has a rail link to Odense, so the same line takes you home. Marathon Month: September Duration: 2 nights

The tourist board confirms that Copenhagen Airport is connected to Odense by rail, which makes the capital the natural end to a trip that began in the race city. The marathon is on a Sunday, so Monday morning is the time to board. Check the journey time and book a seat on the rail operator's site.

September in Copenhagen. Early autumn is cool and often bright. The centre is level, with cycle lanes and a metro. Showers come off the sea quickly, so pack a light waterproof.

Night one: the old centre

Stay near the central station or on the harbour side, within a short walk of the metro. Search a booking site for cancellable rooms and ask about luggage storage and late checkout.

The flat walk to start with is the King's Garden and the area around Rosenborg Castle, a Renaissance palace built for Christian IV in the early 17th century that still holds the Danish crown jewels. The paths are level gravel and paving. Check Rosenborg's September opening hours and ticket prices before you go. The gardens are free and open most of the day.

Night two: museums and the harbour

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is an art museum in the centre with indoor, level floors and plenty of seating, which suits the second day. Check opening days, since many Danish museums close on Mondays. Nyhavn, the old harbour canal with painted houses, is a flat stroll from the centre. Expect cobbles.

Tivoli Gardens, beside the central station, opened in 1843. Opening dates and times vary through the year, so check the Tivoli website before planning an evening there.

Eating

Copenhagen has a wide range of markets and restaurants. Check which are open on the days you are there, and book dinner ahead for the weekday evenings.

Getting to the airport

Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is reached by train and metro from the centre. Buy your ticket for the right fare zone in advance. Allow a generous margin for an early flight, and check the first trains of the morning.
