Maragogi lies across the state line in Alagoas and is the longest trip in this set, so it suits a runner with several free days.
May in Maragogi: May falls in the rainy season on this stretch of the north-east coast. The regional climate outlook points to substantial rain across the Recife area between May and July, and it is reasonable to expect similar weather up the coast. Pack a light waterproof and keep the reef trip loose.
The Reef Pools
The town is known for its offshore reef pools, reached by boat at low tide. Operators set departure times by the tide and the sea state, so book through your hotel or a licensed operator on the beach and keep a spare day. Do not book the reef trip for the day you travel.
Three Nights
The first night is for arriving and walking a flat stretch of the sea front. The second day is the reef trip, weather permitting. The third is for doing nothing, which is the point of a trip that follows a marathon.
Getting There
The drive from Recife is about 130 km. At an assumed average speed that is about two hours 36 minutes by car, but traffic and road works change this. A day tour from Recife does not turn into a one-way luggage service, so book a proper transfer for a stay of several nights, and agree the return pick-up in advance.
Where to Stay
- Maragogi Brisa Exclusive is a mid-range hotel close to the coast with very high ratings. Ask about the walk to the beach and the breakfast time.
- Ibis Styles Maragogi is a more modest option with a high rating among reviewers and a lower price. Confirm the distance to the sea front.
Where to Eat
Seafood is the obvious choice. Ask your hotel to recommend a place within a short walk, and take a late lunch on the day of the reef trip.
Getting Home
Leave by pre-booked transfer on the fourth morning. For a flight from Recife/Guararapes airport, allow a long buffer for the road, and do not take the last transfer of the day.
