The 2026 marathon route passed through Recife Antigo, so a runner who did the full distance has already seen the district once, in the dark. The Tuesday after is the chance to see it with the lights on.
May in Recife: May is in the rainy season on the Pernambuco coast, and the regional climate agency's outlook material points to substantial rain across the Recife area between May and July. Plan the day around two museums with roofs, carry a thin waterproof and leave the long waterfront wander for a dry spell.
Why Tuesday
Both museums close on Mondays, which is the day most runners will be free. The Paço do Frevo lists Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday 11:00 to 19:00, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. Entry is free on Tuesdays. On other days it is R$10 full price and R$5 reduced. The Cais do Sertão lists Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 16:00 and Saturday and Sunday 13:00 to 18:00, with free entry on Tuesdays. Check both sites before you go, since opening hours and prices change.
If you have a Monday to fill, spend it in Olinda's old town and save Recife for the next day.
The Paço do Frevo
Frevo is the fast, brightly coloured carnival music of Pernambuco, danced with a small umbrella that looks like a prop and works as a balance aid. The Paço do Frevo is a museum of the music and its dance. It also explains why the race finish includes frevo orchestras and giant puppets, which are a local tradition and not a marathon invention.
Allow an hour and a half. The building is flat and indoor, which suits legs that went up and down kerbs for four hours.
The Cais do Sertão
The Cais do Sertão is a museum of the Pernambuco interior and its music, in a converted port warehouse. Large bags and food are restricted at the entrance, so leave your luggage at the hotel. Allow another hour and a half.
Getting There
From Casa Caiada or the historic centre of Olinda, take a taxi or app car south to the Marco Zero, the square at the centre of Recife Antigo. The distance is short but the traffic is not predictable, so give yourself more time than the map suggests. Public transport on the same corridor is an ordinary city bus with no race-weekend service, and not a sensible choice with stiff legs.
Where to Eat
Recife Antigo has no shortage of lunch spots near the two museums. Ask the museum desk for a restaurant within a short walk and pick somewhere with a table indoors. A plate of the local fish with rice and beans is a fine recovery lunch.
Getting Home
Return to Olinda by the same road in the late afternoon, before the evening traffic builds. If you have a flight from Recife/Guararapes airport that night, do the museums first and take your luggage to the airport directly, leaving a generous buffer for the traffic.
