Ostrava was built on coal and iron, and Vítkovice is where the iron was made. The ironworks closed, the buildings stayed, and the district now works as a cultural quarter in the shell of an industrial plant. For a runner who has just spent four hours circling a square, it is a change of scale.

September in Vítkovice is a good month for it, with the site open and the weather still mild. Check the opening hours for the day you want, because only the tourist office's reservation advice for Bolt Tower was confirmed.

Night one: the district

Bolt Tower sits at Ruská 2993. The official tourist page recommends reserving, because the café has limited capacity. Book first. Do not assume every route through the structure is step-free, and decide how much you want to climb before you are on the staircase.

The wider site is large and mostly flat, but it involves a lot of walking on hard surfaces. Pace it. Take a long lunch and a seat on the way, and keep the afternoon for a rest at the hotel.

Where to stay: A central hotel and a taxi is the simplest plan. Imperial, Mercure, Ruby Blue and Hotel Maria are all in the centre, and none is in Vítkovice itself. Book in town and treat Vítkovice as a trip out.

Where to eat: Comedor, at Zámecká 488/20 in the centre, lists Sunday hours of 12:00 to 21:30. Check its other days and book.

The next morning

Take the book you brought. Ostrava's Industrial Heritage by Miloš Matěj (NPÚ, 2022) covers the mining and metallurgy behind what you saw. Then head for the airport.

Getting to Ostrava Airport (OSR)

Ostrava Airport publishes S4 and S8 train services and an Airport Express to Nám. Republiky. Check the timetable for your flight, because 2027 services were not verified. Allow a margin: a missed train is a longer wait than a missed tram.
