The Pelotas Marathon is run on a Sunday in October. Porto Alegre is the nearest large airport city to Pelotas, so this itinerary uses the long coach ride as the outward journey and puts the airport at the end.

October in Porto Alegre: spring, with changeable weather. Plan for cool mornings, a mild middle of the day and a chance of rain, and carry a light waterproof.

The Journey

State tourism puts Pelotas 243 km from Porto Alegre by the BR-116 and BR-392. Expresso Embaixador serves the route and sells tickets at both ends and at the capital's airport. Dated examples on a comparison site show trips of roughly 3 hours 15 minutes and 4 hours 10 minutes, so the time depends on the service. At 60 to 70 km/h on the road, 243 km is about 3.5 to 4 hours before stops. Book a dated ticket, check the arrival terminal and allow time for a taxi at each end.

Nights One to Three: The Guaíba and One Museum

The anchor is the Fundação Iberê at Avenida Padre Cacique 2000, on the Guaíba shore. It opens Thursday to Sunday from 14:00, with last admission at 18:00, and Thursday is free. It describes accessible facilities and wheelchair availability, and its café is open from 13:30 to 19:00 on open days. A Monday arrival gives you Monday to Thursday, which catches the free Thursday, while a short Monday to Wednesday stay misses the museum entirely.

The museum lists buses on the Serraria line (179 and 179.5), a pedestrian underpass from the waterfront and a nearby pier. Check the current route from your hotel before relying on any of these, and take a taxi if in doubt. Keep other days short: one outing in the morning, lunch, a seat, and an early evening.

Where to Stay and Eat

Choose a hotel in a central or riverside district with a lift and breakfast included, close to where the coach arrives. Avoid a booking that depends on a long walk uphill. Ask your hotel to recommend dinner within a few blocks, and look for a place that serves the regional grilled meats, with a seat that does not require stairs.

Getting to the Airport

Porto Alegre Salgado Filho Airport (POA) is the main airport. Taxi or arranged transfer is the lower-risk option on the day you fly, and a morning departure is easier if you have spent the last night in the city. If you plan to go direct from Pelotas on the day of your flight, leave a margin of a full half day for the coach.
