The Plitvice Lakes Marathon finishes on a Sunday at the sports hall in Mukinje, usually in the first week of June. By Monday most runners have seen enough of hills, and Rastoke offers the opposite: water that falls in small steps, a village built around it, and a walk that is mostly level.
June in Rastoke: water levels on the Korana follow the spring and early summer rain, so the cascades can run anywhere between a trickle and a roar. Expect warm afternoons with the occasional shower, and wet stone underfoot at any time of year.
Slunj sits about 40 km north of the park on the road towards Karlovac. Hiring a car for the day or asking your Mukinje host to arrange a transfer is the simplest route. Coaches on the Plitvice to Karlovac and Zagreb corridor pass through this area, but whether a given service stops in Slunj depends on the timetable, so check arriva.com.hr before relying on one. Parking at Rastoke is paid from May to November.
The Mills
Rastoke is the old quarter of Slunj, where the Slunjčica joins the Korana and the water drops over travertine ledges. The mills that gave the village its character were built directly into those ledges, some of them now used as homes, restaurants and cafés. Water runs beneath, beside and sometimes through them.
The public promenade along the river is open year-round and costs nothing. It is the right choice for tired legs: you can follow the river at walking pace and stop whenever the legs ask. Expect some stone steps and slick boards at the viewpoints, since this is a village built on a waterfall, and handrails are not guaranteed everywhere. The ticketed Vodene Tajne path (the name means "water secrets") goes closer to the mills and the falls. Check the current price and opening hours with Slunj tourism before you go.
Private mills and estates set their own hours and admissions. Do not assume a single ticket covers all of them.
Getting Back
If you have a car, drive back the way you came. If you came by transfer, agree a pick-up time before you leave Mukinje. A late-afternoon return leaves time to eat in one of the mill restaurants first. Book ahead if you want a specific mill.
