The marathon finishes on a Sunday in April. Hisarya is a town built round hot water. The municipal guide counts 22 mineral springs here, at temperatures of 37 to 51°C. That is the kind of fact a runner reads on Sunday evening with a bag of ice on one knee and thinks: Monday, then.

April in Hisarya: the town sits on the plain north of Plovdiv, and April is still a spring month with cool mornings. Hotel pools, treatment menus and opening hours have not been verified, so ring ahead. A short, flat walk through the town before dinner is enough movement.

Where to eat: eat where you sleep on the first evening, and walk to a restaurant on the second morning only if the legs allow.

Getting home

Take the road back to Plovdiv the next day. If you fly from Plovdiv Airport (PDV), check the flight time before choosing a transfer departure, and leave a buffer for a Tuesday morning. For a longer flight home, confirm the transfer the evening before.
