The Plovdiv Marathon finishes on a Sunday in April, and the capital is 157 km up the road. That is a long ride on legs that have just run 42.2 km, so the plan is simple: make the move once, keep the first day almost entirely seated and use the rest for two stops that sit down well.

April in Sofia: this is a spring month, so expect cool mornings and the possibility of rain. Opening hours for the churches and museums have not been confirmed for April, so check each one before you go.

The municipal distance table gives 157 km, and a planning allowance of two and a half to three and a half hours by road includes a buffer. It is not a quoted service time. The Bulgarian State Railways website says that fares are dynamic and depend on the day and time, and the train timetable was not available to read, so confirm a train separately on bdz.bg. For a runner with luggage, a private transfer to the hotel door is the least tiring choice.

Nights one to three: Sofia

Arrival day. Check in, eat nearby and rest. Do not plan a tour for the first afternoon.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Most of it was built between 1904 and 1912, and it was consecrated on 12 September 1924. It is dedicated to a Russian prince and honours the Russian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 to 1878. The building holds up to 5,000 people, and its crypt holds a museum of Bulgarian icons, which belongs to the National Art Gallery. Opening hours and fees were not found, so check them. It is mostly level inside and the crypt is a short visit.

The Boyana Church. UNESCO listed it in 1979. The eastern section dates from the late tenth or early eleventh century, and the central wing was added in the mid-13th century, with a second layer of frescoes painted in 1259 by an unknown artist known as the Boyana Master. Those frescoes include more than 240 figures. Entry is tightly controlled to protect them. Groups are limited to eight visitors, and each group may stay for ten minutes, in an interior kept at 17 to 18°C. Ask about booking and the way there before you go, because a short visit still needs planning.

The last day. Keep it light. Walk slowly, sit for coffee and leave early for the airport.

Where to stay: choose a hotel with a lift and a quiet room, and book a refundable rate. No hotel was verified for April, so check availability and luggage storage before you pay.

Where to eat: choose by the menu on the door, and book ahead for a group.

Getting to Sofia Airport

Sofia Airport (SOF) is the nearest major airport. Confirm a taxi or public transport the day before, since early flights can leave you without a public option. If you would rather fly from Plovdiv, check Plovdiv Airport (PDV) schedules before booking the trip.
