Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans and shared between Montenegro and Albania, sits under 40 minutes from Podgorica by direct bus, with departures frequent enough that a runner can pick a convenient time without much planning. Virpazar, the small lakeside town most boat trips depart from, sits flat at the water's edge, making the day itself low-impact for legs still recovering from a marathon, with the lake experience largely done seated in a boat rather than on foot.

November falls outside the lake's busiest summer boating season, so checking current tour availability and departure times before travelling is worth doing rather than assuming a boat will be ready to leave on arrival.

Boat Trips from Virpazar

Boat trips from Virpazar typically run out onto the lake past extensive floating water-lily fields, most vivid earlier in the season but still a distinctive feature of the lake's ecology year-round, and past small islands including Grmožur, a former 19th-century prison fortress now standing in ruin. Lake Skadar is one of Europe's most significant bird habitats, and even outside peak migration season, the wetland scenery itself is worth the trip regardless of how much birdlife is visible on a given day.

Rijeka Crnojevića

Rijeka Crnojevića, a smaller village further along the lake system, is reachable from the wider Skadar area and known for a distinctive multi-arched stone bridge over the Crnojevića river, a popular photograph point for the whole national park. Reaching it specifically usually requires a local taxi or an organised tour from Virpazar rather than a direct public bus.

Virpazar's small selection of restaurants specialises in freshwater fish from the lake itself, a genuinely local dish rarely found inland in Podgorica. Check current opening hours before travelling, since some establishments reduce service outside the summer season.
