Florianópolis is the coastal extension worth committing real time to, a short flight up the coast from Porto Alegre and a complete change of register from the marathon and the wine country alike.
An Island Out of Season
July is winter in Florianópolis, which means quieter beaches, cooler air, and a version of the island that has nothing to do with its reputation as a summer party destination. That works in a runner's favour: cool walks, seafood, and a slower rhythm than a marathon week normally allows.
The Lagoons and Beaches
Florianópolis is built around a series of lagoons and beaches connected by manageable coastal roads, most of them walkable at a gentle pace or covered by short taxi rides. There is no obligation to be active here; sitting somewhere with a view of the water is a legitimate use of a recovery day.
Where to Stay and Eat
The island has accommodation across every price range, with the seafood, particularly oysters farmed locally in the surrounding waters, the standout reason to eat out rather than in. Restaurants along the lagoon are the easiest to reach without a car.
Getting Back
A short flight returns to Porto Alegre or connects onward; the longer bus route is a viable but considerably slower alternative for anyone travelling with more luggage tolerance than time pressure.
