Gramado and Canela sit two to three hours north of Porto Alegre in the Serra Gaúcha, close enough for an overnight extension without eating into the whole trip.
A Winter Town Done Properly
July puts Gramado in its coldest, most characterful season: log fires, chocolate shops, and a European-influenced architecture that leans into the cold rather than apologising for it. This is a town built for exactly the kind of unhurried, indoor-friendly day that suits legs recovering from a marathon.
Canela and Caracol Falls
A short drive from Gramado, Canela is the quieter of the two towns and the base for visiting Caracol Falls, a waterfall viewable from a platform without demanding a hike. Keep to short scenic stops rather than longer walks so soon after 42km.
Where to Stay and Eat
Both towns are dense with pousadas and chocolate-and-fondue restaurants suited to a short, comfortable stay. Book ahead in July, since the cool season is a popular window for domestic tourism to the region.
Getting Back
Coaches and private transfers run the route back to Porto Alegre in the same two to three hours as the outbound journey, timed around onward flights or the rest of the trip.
