The Route: Fiera di Primiero → Lago di Calaita (1 night) → Fiera di Primiero Logistics: The lake is reached by a mountain road from the Siror area. Confirm road access, parking and any seasonal shuttle before you go, because narrow stretches and temporary restrictions apply. A hire car is the easiest option. The Lagorai is the quiet range on the other side of the Primiero valley from the Pale. Its rock is volcanic, mostly porphyry, and the hills are rounded, forested and lower in profile than the Dolomites, which means fewer crowds and more grazing cattle. Lago di Calaita sits at about 1,600 metres, in a hollow ringed by spruce, and a small hut stands on the shore.

The surrounding ground is gentle. A path circles the water on level ground, and a marathon-tired body can manage it without protest.

July in Calaita: days are warm in the sun and cool in the shade, and the nights are cold at this altitude. Pack a fleece. Thunderstorms come in the afternoon, and the lake can disappear into cloud within minutes. The meadows are busy with insects and wildflowers.

Getting there

From Fiera di Primiero, follow the road towards Siror and then the signed mountain road up to the lake. It is paved for much of the way but narrow, with passing places. Check with the tourist office in Primiero for the current state of the road and for any shuttle service, and confirm where you can park. Do not rely on a bus.

The lake and the shoreline

The shoreline path is flat and short, and it makes a pleasant loop of an hour or less at an easy pace. Meadows run down to the water on one side, and woods on the other. Sit and watch the light. Dogs and cattle share the area.

Where to stay

Accommodation near the lake is limited and may be a hut or a small hotel, with beds that need booking well ahead. Check opening dates and whether dinner is included. A fallback is a room in Siror or Fiera, with a day trip up to the lake. Mountain hotels and huts change hands and opening dates often, so confirm directly with the owner.

Eating

Hut food is the draw. Expect polenta, cheese, cured meats, soups and cakes made on the premises. Ask what is local, and book a table for the evening.

Getting back

Drive back down to Fiera in daylight if you can, and take the bends slowly. Check fuel and the weather before you leave the lake.
