Windsor offers a different kind of riverside town from Richmond itself, built around Windsor Castle rather than the Thames Path scenery the marathon's own course covers. September in Windsor: the castle and town centre running at their normal pace, well outside peak summer crowds.

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle, the world's oldest and largest occupied castle, dominates the town and is open to visitors for a genuine half-day or full-day visit, including the State Apartments and St George's Chapel. The town itself, compact and walkable, sits directly on the Thames a short distance upstream from the marathon's own riverside miles.

Where to eat: Windsor's town centre has a good range of cafés and pubs, particularly around the castle and the riverside.

Getting Back

The train back to Richmond retraces the same route, with one change, a straightforward end to the day.
