After the Rimi Riga Marathon: Old Town and the Art Nouveau District

The Route: Old Town → Centrs (Art Nouveau district) → Old Town Logistics: Entirely walkable from most central hotels. Marathon Month: May Duration: Day trip

Old Town ──(on foot)──> Centrs (Art Nouveau district) ──(on foot, return)──> Old Town

Riga rewards a slow, entirely walkable day more than most European marathon host cities: the historic Old Town and the Art Nouveau district both sit within easy reach of the centre, and neither demands the kind of longer transit day some other excursions in this collection do. This is a genuinely good fit for legs that ran 42 kilometres the day before.

Mid-May in Riga runs cool, and wind is a real factor even on an otherwise pleasant day; carry a layer regardless of how the morning looks.

Riga's Old Town is compact and mostly cobbled, a UNESCO-listed historic core with a genuine medieval street layout; a slow circuit taking in the main square and the surrounding lanes covers most of what the area offers without needing a fixed route. The cobbles themselves are worth noting on tired legs, less forgiving underfoot than a flat pavement.

The Art Nouveau district, a short walk from Old Town in the Centrs area, holds one of the world's densest concentrations of Art Nouveau architecture, elaborate facades along streets like Alberta iela requiring no advance booking or ticket, just a slow walk with your head tilted upward. This stretch is flatter and easier on recovering legs than the cobbled Old Town core.

There is no return journey to plan beyond walking back the way you came; Riga's centre is compact enough that the whole day works without leaving on foot range of your hotel.
