Where Riga's own Old Town gives the marathon trip a Latvian capital city break, Tallinn offers a genuinely different Baltic capital only a few hours away: a compact medieval Old Town of its own, but with a distinctly different character, walled and hilltop rather than Riga's flatter river-plain layout. Two nights covers Tallinn's core sights properly.

May in Tallinn runs a similar cool, changeable pattern to Riga itself, with genuinely long daylight hours by this point in spring.

Nights One and Two: Tallinn

Tallinn's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is built on a hill and enclosed by well-preserved medieval walls, considerably more compact than Riga's own Old Town but with a steeper, more varied walking terrain; pace yourself on legs still recovering from the marathon two days before. Toompea, the upper section of the Old Town, offers panoramic views over the lower town and the Baltic Sea beyond.

Kadriorg Park, a short tram ride from the centre, offers a flatter, more level alternative for a lower-impact second day, home to a Baroque palace and formal gardens.

Where to stay: The Old Town itself puts you within walking distance of the main sights, though note the terrain is hillier and more varied underfoot than Riga's own flatter centre.

Where to eat: Tallinn's Old Town carries a strong restaurant scene ranging from traditional Estonian fare to more contemporary options, well suited to an unhurried two-night stay.

Getting Home

Return to Riga by the same coach route, or, if flying home, note that Tallinn Airport offers a different set of connections to Riga's own airport, worth checking if this leg changes your onward travel plans.
