The Rosario Marathon starts and finishes at the Monumento a la Bandera. A runner who stays in the centre has already seen the city's main square mile at speed. Two nights in the same room, with short outings, is the low-effort way to use the Monday and Tuesday.

June in Rosario: Winter. The city's cool season, from early June to the first half of August, averages about 5°C overnight and about 16°C by day. Mornings are cold and the river is open to the wind, so carry a jacket and a hat.

Night One: the monument and the evening

The Monumento Nacional a la Bandera stands near the Paraná riverbank. The city tourism office records its inauguration on 20 June 1957, and its 70-metre tower commemorates Belgrano's raising of the flag in 1812. An exterior visit is short and needs no booking. Check tower and interior hours before planning to go in.

For a bed, Esplendor Savoy is a central historic hotel with a restaurant, Rock and Fellers, which publishes ordinary hours of 07:00 to 23:00. Solans República is another central option. Both are verified as operating, but the walk to the monument has not been measured, so check it before booking. Ask either about late checkout, because Solans advertises early and late checkout subject to availability, not as a guarantee.

For dinner, La Marina at 1º de Mayo 890 is a Spanish-style restaurant close to the monument, known for empanada gallega and seafood and rice dishes. Its published hours are Monday to Saturday, 12:00 to 15:00 and 20:00 to 23:00, so it is closed on Sundays and suits the Monday evening. Book ahead.

Night Two: the park and the river

Parque de la Independencia holds the Castagnino fine arts museum, the Newell's Old Boys football club, a racetrack and other sports clubs. Choose one short stretch of level path rather than the whole park.

The Museo Castagnino is at Avenida Pellegrini 2202. Entry is free. The city tourism office lists Tuesday to Friday 13:00 to 19:00 and weekends and holidays 10:00 to 19:00. It is not open on Mondays, so the Tuesday after a Sunday race is the day to go. Plan a seated rest between galleries.

The tourism office also lists boat trips through the islands of the upper Paraná delta. Winter departures vary, so ask an operator for the next sailing. Boarding can involve steps or a ramp, which matters on the second day after a marathon.

Getting to Rosario Airport

Rosario's airport is Islas Malvinas International Airport (ROS). Airport bus 115 boards at stop 1907 outside the terminal. The published fare was ARS 2,150 (about £1.10) at the last check. Check the current fare and timetable, or take a taxi from the hotel. A flight home from Buenos Aires needs a coach of about 4 hours, so leave a day in hand.
