The Rosario Marathon finishes at the Monumento a la Bandera, on the west bank of the Paraná. Victoria sits on the east bank, in another province. A road bridge joins the two cities, and it crosses the delta flood plain for almost 60 km.

June in Victoria: Winter. Victoria is a river resort, and the beach season is a summer business. In June expect cool, quiet streets, closed beach facilities and shorter days. The long Carnival season runs from January into early March, so none of it overlaps the race.

The tourism office lists an excursion to Victoria from Rosario. Another listing, a country day at BordeRío, includes a winery visit and tastings. Durations, days and prices are not listed, so check the operator's schedule for a Monday or Tuesday and confirm whether winter departures run.

Night One: Victoria

The town has about 32,000 residents. The flat walk is the river edge, where the Paraná runs along the city. Streets are level and traffic is light, so a short loop of the centre suits stiff legs.

The Abadía Los Monjes del Niño Dios, a Benedictine abbey founded in 1899, is the main cultural stop. The church dedicated to the town's patron, the Virgen de Aranzazú, is also in the centre. Check opening hours and any visitor rules for the abbey before travelling.

For a bed, Victoria has a five-star hotel and a range of others, but none is named here. Ask the tourism office or the excursion operator for a recommendation, and book a heated room. For dinner, ask the hotel which restaurant is open on a winter weeknight, because small towns shut early.

Getting Home

Return across the bridge to Rosario. The airport at Rosario is Islas Malvinas (ROS), and airport bus 115 boards at stop 1907 outside the terminal. The published fare was ARS 2,150 (about £1.10), so check the current fare and timetable. A flight home from Buenos Aires needs a coach to the capital, which takes about 4 hours, so leave a day in hand.
