After the Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 Marathon: Stonehenge and Old Sarum

The Route: Salisbury → Old Sarum → Stonehenge Logistics: By car or organised tour; both sites are short trips from central Salisbury. Duration: Day trip

Salisbury ──(short drive)──> Old Sarum ──(short drive)──> Stonehenge

After a challenge-style marathon built around Wiltshire's own countryside, a short trip out to two of the county's biggest historical sites makes a fitting, low-effort close to the weekend. Both sites reward an unhurried visit, well suited to legs recovering from a hilly, mixed-terrain route.

Old Sarum

Old Sarum, the ruined hilltop settlement that predates Salisbury itself, sits just outside the modern city and offers a compact, low-effort visit with wide views over the surrounding countryside.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge, one of the world's best-known prehistoric monuments, sits a short further drive away, with a visitor centre and shuttle service to the stones themselves.

Where to eat: Both sites have on-site cafés suited to a straightforward lunch stop during the day.

Getting Back

The return drive to Salisbury retraces the same short route, a manageable close to the day for legs still recovering from the race.
