After the Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 Marathon: Winchester

The Route: Salisbury → Winchester Logistics: By train; a direct rail journey between the two cathedral cities. Duration: Day trip

Salisbury ──(train)──> Winchester

Winchester offers a genuine echo of Salisbury's own cathedral-city character, an easy rail day trip for runners who enjoyed the historic setting of the race itself and want more of the same at a gentler pace.

Winchester

Winchester Cathedral, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, anchors a compact, walkable city centre alongside the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the historic Great Hall, home to a round table associated with the Arthurian legend. The city's flat, easy streets make for a low-effort day suited to legs recovering from a hilly marathon.

Where to eat: Winchester's city centre has a good spread of cafés and restaurants around the cathedral close and high street.

Getting Back

The direct train back to Salisbury retraces the same route, a short and easy journey to close out the day.
