The Salvador Marathon is run on a Sunday in late September, finishing on the Boca do Rio waterfront after a pre-dawn start. Itaparica is the nearest thing to a change of scene that does not involve a night away: an island across the bay, with its own historic centre, reached by boat.

September in Itaparica: the city's weather station records a September rainfall normal of 99.3 mm and a mean daily maximum of 27.7°C, and no separate record was used for the island. Carry a light waterproof and a hat, and assume that sun and a shower can arrive on the same crossing.

Getting There

The public crossing is run by Internacional Travessias from the São Joaquim terminal in Salvador to the Bom Despacho terminal on Itaparica. The operator's own FAQ describes ordinary hourly departures, subject to operation and weather, so a skipped sailing is possible. Take a taxi to São Joaquim; do not plan a walk to the terminal on the Monday after the race. The operator's vehicle reservation rules, which use set times, apply to cars and not to foot passengers. You buy a foot-passenger ticket for the next departure.

The ferry connects two terminals. It does not drop you in the old town. From Bom Despacho you need a local taxi or van to reach Itaparica's historic centre, and the frequency of onward transport was not confirmed, so agree a pick-up time with the driver before you let them go. Check the return timetable at the terminal before you leave Salvador.

The Day

Keep the plan short. Take the ferry out in the morning, spend the middle of the day in the historic centre and sit down more often than feels necessary. Do not try to cover the island on foot, and leave beaches that need a long sand walk for another trip. The quay and the town streets are the places to look for a seat in the shade and a plate of fish, and you can ask the driver for a restaurant that suits a short walk.

The honest drawback is the boarding. Gangways are steep, queues form at the ferry terminal on busy days, and standing on a moving deck with tired quads is harder than it looks. Take a seat inside if you can.

Luggage and Timing

Leave the main bag at your Salvador hotel only by prior agreement, since a hotel is not obliged to hold luggage after checkout. Carry your passport or identity document, a card, some cash and any medication. Terminal luggage storage was not confirmed.

Do not stack this trip against a flight. Weather can stop a crossing, and a day on an island is the opposite of a tight connection. If you fly the next morning, book the return ferry for the early afternoon and allow a long evening in Salvador. The return to your hotel is a taxi from São Joaquim, and a drive on a Monday evening can take longer than the map suggests.
